Royce Rolls Page 29

  That it’s real.

  [Fade out.]

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Getting ROYCE ROLLS into the hands of readers was a (JOYOUS!) labor of (UNBRIDLED!) love that I had the (INCOMPARABLE!) honor of sharing with my (RIDICULOUSLY!) rock-star team at Freeform.*

Here is how it happened: I started writing it for fun, because writers do that sometimes, out of slight madness (see: writers) and also because all LA writers have at least one good LA story in them. Raphael Simon & Melissa de la Cruz (GLEEFULLY!) read the early chapters. Hilary Reyl (MORE GLEE!) listened in the car on the way to Eunei Lee’s place (COMPOUND!) in Maine. Veronica Roth (CHEERILY!) said keep going you weirdo. Virginia Stock (KNOWINGLY!) said this could be a show. My agent at the Gernert Company Sarah Burnes (UNFLAPPABLE!) said well, why not? Editor-in-Chief & Associate Publisher Emily Meehan (MEDIA MAGNATE!) at Freeform said I don’t know what this is but I think I like it. . . .

And from there it went like this: Emily Meehan, Kieran Viola & Heather Crowley (MASTERFULLY!) edited it. Many, many times. Patricia Callahan, Meredith Jones & Dan Kaufman (PAINSTAKINGLY!) copyedited and proofread it. Mary Ann Zissimos, Seale Ballenger & Andrew Sansone (BRILLIANTLY!) publicized it. Holly Nagel & Elke Villa (INGENIOUSLY!) marketed it. Marci Senders (ON FLEEK!) designed it, and Sara Not (DOUBLE FLEEK!) created the art for it. At Freeform Network—Go Karey Burke (FEARLESS!)—Simran Sethi (& PEACHES!) thought of using it on the air, and Kirsten Creamer (INDEFATIGABLE!) made that happen, while Dalia Ganz & Amina Ahmad pulled off the (EPIC!) cover reveal. Sam Roach (TEEN PRODIGY!) shot the trailer for my fictional—(TERRIBLE!)—ROLLING WITH THE ROYCES television show, with the help of Shane Pangburn (SHANE OF ALL TRADES!) on graphics. Melissa de la Cruz, Curtis Sittenfeld, Veronica Roth, Daniel Handler, Ransom Riggs, Marie Lu, Maureen Johnson, Jesse Andrews, Brendan Reichs, Kami Garcia & Danielle Paige gave me (TRULY AWFUL!) reviews for the Royces’ (AGAIN, HORRID!) show. Tori Hill (FUTURE POTUS!) put together my social media, tour promotions, and the book’s launch. Susanna Hoffs (TINY YET EMPHATIC!) laughed in all the right places at my earliest draft.

And my family, Lewis, Emma, May & Kay Peterson; Dave, Sara, Jake & Charlie Stohl; Burton & Marilyn Stohl; plus as a bonus Jackson Roach & Alex Kamenetzsky (not to mention Jiji & Kiki) listened to me stress about it all (INCESSANTLY!) from start to finish. Sometimes they laughed. Sometimes they ignored me. Either way, I’m truly grateful for all of the above—and I know exactly how lucky (VERY!) I am. XO

*Side note: Kids, when you’re figuring out what you want to do when you grow up, ask yourselves these questions: 1) Would I do it for free? 2) Would I do it with these people? 3) Would I keep doing it? 4) If things went south, would I say to myself, like any good sea commander, “It is my honor and privilege to go down with this ship”? If the answer is yes to all of the above, you’re right where you’re supposed to be . . . like me!
